Project summary

The Musi Riverfront Landscape envisions the revival of Hyderabad’s historic river as a vibrant ecological and public destination. By combining environmental restoration with recreational infrastructure, the project transforms neglected river edges into accessible, resilient and biodiverse public spaces that reconnect citizens with the river while improving the urban ecosystem.

The project was conceived to restore the ecological health of the Musi River while creating inclusive public spaces that encourage recreation, environmental awareness and community engagement. The design aims to balance river conservation with urban development, celebrating the river as the "Lifeline of Hyderabad."

Design challenge and response
  • Degraded river ecosystem and poor water quality.
  • Underutilized and inaccessible river edges.
  • Need for flood-resilient public infrastructure.
  • Limited biodiversity and fragmented habitats.
  • Creating attractive public spaces without compromising ecological restoration.
Response:

The design introduces nature-based solutions including constructed wetlands, bio-islands, swales and reed beds to improve water quality and support biodiversity. Continuous walking, jogging and cycling tracks reconnect people with the river, while outdoor gyms, viewing areas and landscape interventions activate the riverfront as a safe and engaging public realm.
